Social media use within organizations and in leadership has certainly made the news this year and can potentially have major drawbacks; however, social media can also provide a plethora of uses such as transparency of information and the immediate release of information to large groups of people. This real-time information can also assist in situations where safety is concerned (Gruber, Smerek, Thomas-Hunt, & Jam, 2015). We need to be cognizant of where the information is coming from and attempt to verify that it is from a reputable source, which can be difficult with the international problem of hacking and inappropriate advertising. Social media can be an effective tool, but we need to monitor our online persona and keep professional and personal accounts separate as all devices and platforms leave an electronic footprint (Cleary, Ferguson, Jackson, & Watson, 2013; National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2011). "Increasingly, individual researchers and academic institutions are being required to rate and rank publications as a metric of both individual researcher and organizational performance" (Davidson et al., 2014). At the end of the year, Wolters-Kluwer, the publisher for Journal of Pediatric Surgical Nursing (JPSN), provides a report that includes altmetrics so the JPSN and its authors can gain insight into the popularity and reach of published articles. JPSN is working to increase its current social media presence by expanding the Twitter and Facebook reach and organizing more interactive uses such as posting journal article reviews and notifications. Please consider participating by "liking" and "tweeting" with JPSN and APSNA, writing a brief article review, or interacting with our new format of "Name the Diagnosis."
