Abstract
Abstract: Gastrostomy tube placement is a common surgical procedure for the management of children with feeding disorders. The care of children with gastrostomy tubes necessitates that nurses be familiar with the different styles of tubes, postoperative care, equipment required for home tube feedings, common early and late complications and their management, and long-term follow-up needs. Parents and other caregivers are often anxious about management of a gastrostomy tube at home. Therefore, they need and rely on nurses who are experienced and confident about gastrostomy tube management to assist and guide them. There is a paucity of published information about the management of the common problems associated with gastrostomy tubes. Rather, practical experience originating from information shared among pediatric surgical nurses has guided our practice.
